The health of resident doctors

Introduction and objectives

During their residencies, trainee doctors go through a formative period that consolidates their studies and lays the ground for their futures as specialists. During this period, junior professionals have the opportunity to acquire attitudes, skills and behaviour that will permit them to practice medicine in a correct and healthy manner, especially as concerns the psycho-affective impact that their work entails. It is therefore important to raise awareness about healthy lifestyles amongst resident doctors as their exemplary roles, along with the opportunities they have to actively disseminate preventive advice, can have an important impact on the general population.

The Study on the health of resident doctors in Catalonia (Galatea Foundation 2008) and similar studies carried out in other countries draw attention to the ways in which the current conditions in which resident doctors are trained (heavy workloads, deficient or insufficient tutelage in some cases, changing sleep patterns, competition amongst peers, future career perspectives...) can lead to difficulties such as stress or burn-out and other psychological and addiction related problems.

General objectives:

  • To better understand the health status of resident doctors in Catalonia.
  • To undertake activities directed towards resident doctors, tutors and professionals within occupational hazard prevention services focussing on prevention and early detection of psychological and addiction related problems, and promotion of healthy habits and lifestyles.
