The Fundació Galatea was created in 2001 by decision of the Council of Medical Associations of Catalonia (Consell de Col·legis de Metges de Catalunya), as a result of the experience of the Program for Assistance to Ill Physicians (Programa d’Atenció al Metge Malalt, or PAIMM). It was created to protect the health and well-being of all health professionals (physicians, nurses, veterinarians, pharmacists, psychologists, dentists and social workers) and, in doing so, to guarantee quality health services to citizens.
As a result of the nature of their work, health professionals have to face psychosocial risk factors (pressure, the need to make decisions affecting the lives of patients, the need to constantly update skills and knowledge, complex organizations, multidisciplinary teams…). If not properly dealt with, these can provoke physical and mental exhaustion, emotional stress, depression or other psychological problems in many professionals. Because of this, our Foundation carries out many initiatives to address the risk factors affecting professionals working in the health sector.
